What Have I Learned?

First Year

First and Second semesters

3 years ago, I was just a freshman. It feels a little bit sad to reminisce the past because you'll gonna miss everything. During our first year, first semester and second semester, I had 4 major subjects enrolled (including the summer class) which were:

  • IT 111L (Computer Fundamental with Office Application);
  • IT 112L (Basic Programming and Problem Solving);
  • IT 121L (Advance Programming) and;
  • IT 131L (Basic Multimedia)

During our IT 111L (Computer Fundamental with Office Application) class sessions, I was able to learn about the right usage of Microsoft Office applications especially Microsoft excel. Back then, I was an ignorant in using computers, that's why I did my best to learn through the help of Prof. Shane Ryan Diaz. We were lucky we had him because he was patient with us that time knowing we were just freshmen.

The picture below shows an example of the problem we solved during our IT 111L class session.

However, during our IT 112L (Basic Programming and Problem Solving) class sessions, I had the feelings of both excitement and doubt to myself.

I was excited because finally I'll be able to get a hold of what I thought was a true IT work -- programming. But, my excitement has ended sooner than I expected. It wasn't as easy as I thought it is. God! How did I told myself it was easy? I don't remember anymore. But I was certain that time that I wanted to shift to another course. I lost my track. But somehow, I was able to tell myself to try harder. Besides, it was just the first day. We had a two-hour class session that time. Maybe I was just exhausted for the first day of school of the second semester. Maybe.

The next day, I regained my strength and focused more on programming. I found myself amazed on things that a specific program can do. Thankfully, our dearest professor that time was Prof. Mely dela Torre. She is a good and smart professor. She's a kind of teacher who will never jump to another topic if anyone of us (even one of us) didn't get the topic. She'll explain it thoroughly and patiently to you until you get the point. I like her.

The picture below shows the snake game in c++. This was the game we used to play during our free time.

After the basic programming, there came another programming subject again. The IT 121L or the Advance Programming which allowed us to explore more on programming languages specifically JAVA. It was quite hard for us to fully understand this new PL (programming language) because the basic PL which was introduced to us is quite different from JAVA. We had a hard time to cope up with the topics but somehow we made it.

The picture below shows the first program we did in JCreator which displays the famous Hello World! text.

After breaking-some-legs during our first year in UMDC, we then faced a new stage of being an IT student. We attended the summer class wherein we enrolled IT 131L or the Basic Multimedia.

This subject gave us a hard time creating multimedia-related things such as creating our own solar system but in 3D. I have learned a lot from this subject. Why not? Our professor Cyvil Dave Dasargo is a professional teacher when it comes to multimedia-related things.

The picture below shows the screen shot of my very own solar system using 3DMax.

Second Year

First and Second semesters

"Finally!", I told myself. Yes, finally I was able to survive my first year in college. I did it. This time, I can still do it.

The major subjects I enrolled in second year (first and second semesters including the summer class) were the following:

  • IT 211L (Data Structure File Organization);
  • IT 212LA (Object-Oriented);
  • IT ELEC (Basic Electronics and Digital Design);
  • IT 221l (Advance Multimedia);
  • IT 222L (Database Management System);
  • IT 231LA (Computer Organization) and;
  • IT 232L (Probability Statistics).

What we discussed in IT 211l or Data Structure File Organization was all about data in memory and secondary storage devices. We also learned about different binary trees, graphs, matching and etc.

The image below shows an example of a full binary tree.

In IT 212LA or Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)we learned that OOP refers to a type of computer programming (software design) in which programmers define not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations (functions) that can be applied to the data structure.

The image below shows the basic fundamental features that you would find in OOP.

In IT ELEC (Basic Electronics and Digital Design), we have learned a lot about different simple electronic circuits.

The picture below shows our final project in electronics.

Our  IT 221l (Advance Multimedia) was full of excitement. It was like we were just playing all the time. Doing basic video and picture editing. And as our final requirements, we did a music video, short story video, and a news-casting video.

The picture below shows the screen shot of our news casting video.

In our IT 222 (Database Management System) class, we did a lot of databases. In our final project, we chose to make a Pizza Online Ordering System.

The picture below shows the logo I made for our proposed business online system.

In our IT 231LA (Computer Organization) we learned that data and instructions to manipulate data were logically the same and could be stored in the same place.

The picture below shows the Control Unit.

A control is the organizing force in the computer, for it is in charge of the Fetch-Execute Cycle. There are two special registers in the control unit. The Instruction Register (IR) contains the instruction that is being executed, and the Program Counter (PR) contains the address of the next instruction to be executed. Because the ALU and the control unit work so closely together they are often thought of as one unit called the Central Processing Unit (CPU).

In our IT 232L (Probability Statistics), we did a lot of excel works. The image below shows the first assignment we did in this subject.

Third Year

First and Second semesters

"Yes! Another stage.", I told myself.

The major subjects I enrolled in third year (first and second semesters including the summer class) were the following:

  • IT 311L (VB Net Proramming);
  • IT 312L (Web Development);
  • IT ELEC2L  (PC Troubleshooting with LAN Servicing);
  • IT ELEC3L (Data Communication and Networking);
  • IT 313L (Systems Analysis and Design);
  • IT 321 (Professional Ethics);
  • IT 322L (Applied Operating System);
  • IT 323 (Technopreneurship);
  • IT ELEC4L (Human Computer Interaction) and;
  • IT 331 (On-the-Job-Training).

In IT 311L (VB Net Proramming), according to Professor Cyvil Dave T. Dasargo, this is the easiest programming language. It's true! For me, it really is easy compared to c++ and JAVA.

The picture below shows one of our projects in VB net.

In our IT 312L (Web Development), we did a lot of basic website designs. The image below shows my first web HTML document.

In IT ELEC2L  (PC Troubleshooting with LAN Servicing), we disassembled and assembled computer parts. The image below shows an example of what we did during our troubleshooting.

In IT ELEC3L (Data Communication and Networking), we made a networking cable using RJ45 and etc. The image below shows the connection of data communications and networking.

In IT 313L (Systems Analysis and Design), it was that time that we experienced the feeling of being a "zombie". We barely sleep that time. It created dark circles around our eyes. It was the time that we fully gave our attention to a single subject. The image below shows the Entity Relationship Diagram of our proposed system for CCNTS-TESDA.

In IT 321 (Professional Ethics), we did discussed about different norms and ethics in using the technology. The picture below shows the screen shot of our final report in this subject.

In IT 322L (Applied Operating System), we discussed about the operating system and its functions. An OS is a system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is a component of the system software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function. The image below shows the operating system placement.

In IT 323 (Technopreneurship), we did some system proposal for certain businesses. We tackled about all the basics of business-related things. The image below shows that technology and entrepreneurship is related to each other to create business and earn money.

In IT ELEC4L (Human Computer Interaction), Professor Cyril EspaƱol taught us that the new technology allows people nowadays to interact with a computer. This subject amazed me so much especially every time we discuss about new inventions and their corresponding functions. It makes life easier.

The image below shows an example of a human-computer-interaction.

In IT 331 (On-the-Job-Training), we have learned a lot about what it really feels to be in a real workplace. The picture below shows the DASURECO workplace where I was assigned to have my On-the-Job-Training.

Fourth Year

First and Second semesters

"At last!", I told myself. This is the final stage.

The major subjects I enrolled in fourth year (first and second semesters) were the following:

  • IT 412L (Software Engineering);
  • IT 421L (Capstone Project) and;
  • IT 4222 (Community Extension and Educational Tour).

In IT 412L (Software Engineering), we learned about the application of engineering to the design, development and maintenance of a software.

The picture below shows the Front Cover I made for our final requirement in this subject.

During our IT 421L or The Capstone Project, we felt very exhausted and drained from the planning up to the final presentation. This subject taught me to remain calm whenever I feel like I'm already bursting for it is the key that allowed me to have better ideas. I believe that if a person can't control his/her anger, he/she will eventually lose almost everything related to you such as friends, companions, ideas, and respect to others and specially to yourself.

The picture below shows the name and logo of our proposed mobile system.

We are currently having our IT 4222 (Community Extension and Educational Tour). I expect to learn and enjoy the things that this subject can offer.

Ciao!
